EXTRA CREDIT OPTIONS in SPRING 2009

Four (4) extra credit options (3 points each) allowed per student per semester. Total max. extra credit points available: 12 points = 4 percentage points added to your final grade.

Extra credit options will be posted throughout the semester. Stay tuned.

Extra credit option: Social Sciences Occasional Lecture Friday April 17, 12:00-2:00. I-106. Speaker: John Berteaux, Professor of Philosophy, Cal State U., Monterey Bay; topic: “Whither Now Individualism, Multiculturalism, or Assimilationism?” Sign in and stay for the first hour, and earn 3 points (expired). If you attended, write 1/2 page about the event and earn another 3 points!

Extra credit option: Social Sciences Occasional Lecture Friday May 8, 12:00-2:00. LRC 435. Speaker: Nina Rosenstand, Professor of Philosophy, Mesa College; topic: “Ethics on the Brain: Moral Theory Meets NeurobiologySign in and stay for the first hour, and earn 3 points. Write 1/2-1 page about the event, and earn an extra 3 points. (expired). If you attended, write 1/2 page about the event and earn another 3 points!

Extra credit option: Write a relevant blog comment to one of Prof. Rosenstand's posts on the www.philosophyonthemesa.com website, and submit it in hard copy under your own name, or submit it without posting it to the blog if you're shy!

Extra credit option: Write 1/2-1 page answering any study question from your course packet (Chapters 7 and/or 13).

 Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film The Life of David Gale, and write 1/2-1 page about its view on the death penalty.

 Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film Minority Report, and write 1/2-1 page about the concept of punishment based on prediction of criminal tendencies.

Extra credit option: Write 1/2-1 page about the renewed interest in Ayn Rand, based on this article: "Is Rand Relevant?" and (if applicable) your own Ayn Rand readings.

Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film Gattaca, and write 1/2-1 page about its relevance for the concept of genetic engineering and respect for persons, referencing scenes that have not been watched in class or mentioned in the course material.

Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film The Island, and write 1/2-1 page about its critical view on cloning.

Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film Blade Runner, and write 1/2-1page about its relevance for the concept of genetic engineering and respect for persons.

Extra credit option: Write 1/2-1page about any of the News items on the Weblinks page.

Extra credit option: Write a relevant comment of 2-3 paragraphs about Prof. Rosenstand's blog entry "Darwin and/or the Quest for Meaning," http://philosophyonthemesa.com

 Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film Minority Report, and write ca. 1/2 page about the concept of punishment based on prediction of criminal tendencies.

 Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film The Name of the Rose (or read the book!), and write ca. 1/2 page about the influence of Aristotle in the Catholic Church of the Middle Ages.

Extra credit option: Lecturer Christa Stutz will talk about  “Urban Transportation Planning from a Geographic Perspective” Friday May 11, LRC 435, 12:00 pm. For double extra credit: Write 1/2 page about the social ramifications of transportation planning, as presented in the talk.

Extra credit option: Professor Dwight Furrow will talk about " The Morality of Blue" Friday April 20, LRC 435, 12-2 pm. Double extra credit! 3 points for attending, and 3 points for writing 1/2 page about the event!

Extra credit option: Pick an extra credit project (a film, a play, an article, an exhibit, etc.) and write 1/2 page about its relevance for social philosophy. Film suggestions: See Chapter 7 and 13 in your coursepacket.

Extra credit option: Borrow (from your instructor) the audiotape of the Social Sciences Occasional Lecture 2/11/05, "Liberalism and Religion in Rawls," and write 1/2 page about the lecture.

Extra credit option: Rent and watch the film Gattaca, and write ca. 1/2 page about its relevance for the concept of genetic engineering and respect for persons.

Extra credit option: Attend the Social Sciences Occasional Lecture May 13, LRC 435. 11:00. Linda McDonald Glenn talks about "A Paler Shade of Gray: Will Neurotechnologies Expand the Boundaries of Life and Death?"
