TURNING TIDES: Gender in Oceania Art, will run at the University of California San Diego Graduate Gallery, Feb. 7-10, 2006. This exhibition is curated by San Diego based Samoan artist, professor of Studio Arts, Jewel Castro with Dr. Pamela Rosi of Bridgewater University and Samoan artist, Dan Taulapapa McMullin.
This is the first exhibition of its kind on the United States mainland. This exhibition is organized by Oceania people, highlighting Oceania artists. The artists are expressing a contemporary identity that links indigenous Oceania gender roles, with the history of traditional art forms, the influence of personal location, experience, and the desire for authentic representation.
Artists representing Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii and New Zealand, based on island, in the United States, and England, will be featured.
Movement of the
exhibition to other venues after UCSD is being planned.

A reception and
Artists' Expo will be held at the gallery Friday, Feb. 10 from 6:00- 7:30p.m.
followed by performances in the UCSD Visual Arts Performance Space live by
Phineas Hartson, and Dan Taulapapa McMullin, and video performances by Shigeyuki
Kihara, and Rosanna Raymond.

From Points North:
Take Interstate 5 South to the LA JOLLA VILLAGE DR. exit.
TURN RIGHT onto LA JOLLA VILLAGE DRIVE.
Turn right at first traffic light, VILLA LA JOLLA DRIVE. Get in left lane.
This feeds you onto campus. Travel up the hill and through 2 traffic lights (= 2
short blocks) and straight into parking structure. Park in the metered
parking. Meters cost 25 cents for every 15 minutes with a maximum of 2
hours. Parking structure is on the corner of GILMAN DRIVE and RUSSELL
LANE.
Exit parking structure on South side onto RUSSELL LANE. TURN RIGHT as you
exit parking structure. The VISUAL ARTS facilities are the second set of
buildings from the parking structure, a short half block down on your right.
As soon as you pass the first set of buildings (Pepper Canyon Hall), turn to
your RIGHT. Take the first open walkway into the Visual Arts facilities
that comes up on your LEFT. The GRADUATE GALLERY is the first doorway on
the right at that entrance. The PERFORMANCE SPACE is located directly
across from the gallery.
From Points South and
East:
Take INTERSTATE 8 WEST
to INTERSTATE 5 NORTH
to the LA JOLLA VILLAGE DR.
exit.
TURN LEFT onto LA JOLLA VILLAGE DRIVE. Get in right lane!
Travel over overpass and TURN RIGHT onto VILLA LA JOLLA DRIVE (the first true
street on your right after you cross over the freeway.)
After making the turn, get in left lane. This feeds you onto campus.
