Driving Directions to Field Trip Meeting Spot:

  • From San Diego, take I-8 East for approximately 30-35 miles, past Viejas Casino.  Once you've passed the casino, start watching for signs to Julian.

  • Several miles past the casino, watch for the I-79 turnoff (Japatul Valley Road)...exit I-8 onto I-79 (Japatul Valley Road).

  • At the bottom of the exit, turn left onto Japatul Valley Road (I-79).

  • Follow I-79 North, through the Cuyamaca Mountains, all the way to Julian.

  • At the "T" intersection of I-79 and I-78 in Julian, turn left.

  • In about 1/4 mile, turn right onto C Street.  Follow the road up the hill.  Look for signs to the mine, which will guide you to the mine entrance.
